As with any designation, there are some CAIA questions that come up more frequently than others when researching this designation. The first question one may ponder when researching the CAIA designation is, “what is the CAIA”. The chartered alternative investment analyst program (CAIA) covers a broad based curriculum in the alternative investments field. The program focuses on the main areas within hedge funds, private equity, commodities, real estate and private equity.
One of the major CAIA questions is, “how do I earn the CAIA designation?”. The right to use the CAIA designation is earned by successfully completing the CAIA program (passing both the Level I and Level II exams) and becoming a member of the CAIA Association. In order to qualify for membership in the Association, you must fulfill each of the following:pass the Level II exam within three years of passing the Level I exam, hold a U.S. bachelor's degree or the equivalent, and have more than one year of professional experience, or alternatively have at least four years of professional experience, submit payment for the annual CAIA Association membership fee, and agree on an annual basis to abide by the Member Agreement.
Another CAIA question that is frequently asked is, “when can I take an exam”.The Level I and Level II exams are held twice each year, in March and September. Registration for the March exam period is open October through January. Registration for the September exam period is open March through July. It is important to note that registration is exam-specific and cannot be postponed or transferred to future exam sessions (e.g., individuals who are registered for the September 2008 exam cannot defer their examination until the March 2009 exam period). The window for each testing period is 10 business days, during which time candidates are responsible for sitting for the exam at one of the proctored testing centers. The Level I and Level II exams cannot be taken within the same exam period.
Another vital question that frequently comes up is “How long do I need to study for the exam”. Regarding the amount of time necessary to devote to the program all candidates are different and will require varying amounts of study time. Therefore, it is nearly impossible to predict an amount of time that would be appropriate for everyone. Based on candidate feedback, the CAIA estimates that Level I requires a minimum of between 150-200 hours of study, while Level II requires 200 or more. Finally, because the Study Guides' number of keywords, main points, and learning objectives differ across the topics in both levels, so the CAIA warns that the amount of time per topic will vary widely.

CAIA Materials | Materials for the CAIA ProgramThe CAIA materials required for success on the CAIA examinations differ greatly. . The CAIA level 1 examination is divided into the two broad sections of quantitative methods and an introduction to alternative investments. The CAIA level 2 examination is divided into two broad sections as well; alternative investments and Current and Integrated Topics. Candidates must apply the skills and knowledge from Level I to gain a deeper understanding of issues involved in each of the areas of alternative investments. Both Levels of the CAIA examination require the use of a study guide provided by the CAIA association. The CAIA Level I and Level II curricula are based on the CAIA books used in conjunction with the study guides.
Within the CAIA materials, one must include the CAIA books there are recommended. For the Level 1 examination, there are four recommended books. For the Level 2 examination, there are six recommended books. Two of the books are recommended for both levels of the exam, meaning a candidate is recommended to purchase eight books total for the examinations. The recommended are; Hedge Funds: Quantitative Insights, Lhabitant, François-Serge. John Wiley & Sons, 2004; Real Estate Finance and Investments: Risks and Opportunities, Linneman, Peter. Linneman Associates, 2004; Standards of Practice Handbook, 9th edition, Charlottesville, Virginia: CFA Institute (recommended for both levels of the examination), 2005; and Handbook of Alternative Assets, 2nd edition, Anson, Mark. New York: Wiley, 2006(recommended for both levels of the examination); Convertible Arbitrage, Calamos, Nick. John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2003; Real Estate Investment Trusts: Structure, Performance, and Investment Opportunities. Chan, Su Han, John Erickson, and Ko Wang. Oxford University Press, 2003; Beyond the J-Curve: Managing a Portfolio of Venture Capital and Private Equity Funds. Meyer, Thomas and Pierre-Yves Mathonet. John Wiley & Sons, 2005; and Quantitative Trading Strategies. Kestner, Lars. McGraw-Hill/Irwin, 2003. To complete the CAIA materials, a candidate is also recommended to purchase a collection of journal articles entitled CAIA Level II: Current and Integrated Topics, which is available through the CAIA Association.
Other CAIA materials are available from study programs such as Schweser, Uppermark, Kaplan, and various other programs. There are also CAIA classes that allow an individual to have a concentrated classroom environment solely focused on the CAIA material.

The CAIA pass rate varies for both the level 1 and level 2 examinations. During the most recent exam, the CAIA pass rate for those who sat for the Level I exam was 72% while those who took the Level II had a 70% passing rate. The CAIA pass rate itself does not tell the entire story of how the examination is graded and what candidates can expect after completing the examination(s).
The CAIA Association benchmarks candidates scores against all the other test-takers, so grading cannot begin until the entire 10 day examination window is closed. The CAIA turnaround time for grading of the Level I is usually within two weeks of the last examination day. For the Level II examination, the results are generally available between four and six weeks from the last examination day due to the inclusion of essay questions. The CAIA exam committee uses 70% of the total points as the initial benchmark but because they compare a candidate's score against the average exam score, there is the potential for a curve. The curve effectively moves the CAIA pass rate below 70%. In addition to curving the CAIA pass rate, the CAIA examination committee reviews all questions after the exam and looks for irregularities. The CAIA has found what was believed to be sufficient ambiguity in the past, and that particular question was removed from the scoring of the exam.
Each level of the CAIA examinations contains different subsections. Currently, the CAIA does not establish separate passing scores for each subsection. In effect this means that it is possible to score lower than 70% in one subsection and still pass the exam.
The way the CAIA reports the results for them exam varies from what a candidate might be expecting from previous examinations. After the end of the exam period, an announcement is made to candidates, inviting them to log in to the website to receive general pass/fail CAIA exam results. Within a week following the online notification, an email with further details (i.e. percentages) is sent to each candidate who sat for an exam which outlines performance in each of the exam subsections. Candidates will learn whether they've achieved greater than 70% required CAIA pass rate in any particular subsection, between 70% and 50% of the points, or less than 50% of the points.

CAIA study tips vary greatly from candidate to candidate. Some of the major areas of focus each candidate will agree on are number of hours to study, the CAIA study guide, CAIA books, and CAIA study programs.
When addressing the first CAIA study tip of study time, it is important to note that the CAIA admits that it is nearly impossible to provide guidelines that would be appropriate for candidate on how much study time is necessary for each level of the examination. When taking the CAIA, a candidate may wish to use a number of different study aids. One aid that some candidates find helpful are CAIA notes. There are CAIA notes that are provided by the CAIA institute itself as well as CAIA notes available from fellow test-takers. The CAIA notes themselves vary quite a bit from company to company. Some of the examination preparatory programs offering CAIA notes are institutional Investor exam prep, Uppermark, Kaplan schweser, and Edhec asset management.
The CAIA preparation notes from the CAIA institute have topic outline followed by learning objectives in a chapter format. The Level I Outline is over 100 pages long while the level II outline is over 60. These should be thought of as the bare minimum to pass the exam. These CAIA notes provide the information necessary to pass the CAIA exam.
One of the best sources of CAIA notes comes from fellow test takers. The notes obtained from study groups or past takers of the CAIA can be invaluable to current candidates. CAIA notes available from fellow test-takers can provide candidates with more specialized notes concentrated on exam topics which others have found the most challenging.
Investor exam prep CAIA notes are hard-copy handbooks that summarize all the Level I learning objectives, from reviewing essential concepts in finance, investment, and statistics, to differentiating between different AI trading strategies and performance measurements. Uppermark CAIA notes provide comprehensive and concise summaries of the content in the CAIA study guide. They not only adhere closely to the CAIA exam curriculum and assigned readings, but are also very well organized. This allows candidates to focus their time more precisely. Each Topic chapter ends with a set of practice test questions that can be used to help you master the material. Kaplan Schweser CAIA notes are easy-to-read and organized by learning objectives. It is a three book set which is a consolidation of the CAIA assigned readings and includes key concepts, concept checker questions, and two full length practice exams.
